Control Your Tongue

Jeremy B. Trio

A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit. – Proverbs 15:4

This verse provides us with a general principle that is true for all people. The tongue of man is one of the most powerful tools for both building and destruction. The verse tells us that a gentle tongue is a tree of life which means that it can bring about revival, comfort, and healing. However, the perverse tongue breaks the spirit which means it can cause pain, sorrow, and distress. It reminds us to choose our words wisely or even change the way we talk to people. Let us not allow anger to overcome us. Uncontrolled anger is the usual cause of harsh words. Pride and arrogance are also a cause of painful words, and lewd conversation is sinful and something that no Christian should ever partake in. We should avoid these things and start thinking and focusing on how we can show our love and respect to the people around us.

Pray this prayer today,

“Lord, guard my lips from speaking things that can harm others. Help me to choose the right words to say that will build others up and not tear them down. Help me choose to love rather than to hurt people. Amen”
