Since I can remember, I identified as a Christian, but it wasn’t until 2014 that I actually became a born-again Christian.
I grew up going to church and all 6 years I spent in boarding school, we went to mass at least 2 times per week. However, I didn’t feel excited about it because at that time I hadn’t taken the decision of following Jesus personally.
After high school, I left Rwanda in 2013 to pursue my undergraduate studies at California Baptist University. There, I met friends who constantly encouraged me to seek personal relationship with God, to read the Bible and fellowship with believers.
That triggered thirst and hunger in me to seek God, and one afternoon, in the summer of 2014 I was following Zion temple celebration center (ZTCC) on YouTube, and apostle Paul Gitwaza preaching 2 Timothy 2:19 asked: “what is the foundation of your faith?”. That and the other part of the message talking about faith, hope, love, and the power of God touched my heart and led to conviction and desire to have a personal relationship with God.
At the end of the service I prayed to receive Jesus Christ as my Lord and savior. From that day on, my relationship with God has grown, and after being discipled, I got baptized when I went home during summer break of 2015 at ZTCC Gatenga.
A lot have changed as a result of having a personal relationship with Jesus, in my spiritual life of course, but also emotionally and physical. I remember how I used to be afraid of what would happen if I died, and every time it came to my mind, I would be scared and start asking God to have mercy on me. But now, I have come to know through God’s word that my life is in Jesus (Revelation 3:20, Romans 10:9-10), In Jesus I have forgiveness of sins, also watching out that I won’t sin deliberately (Colossians 1:13-14; 2:13, John 8:11), I have eternal life (1John 5:11-20, John 6:40), I am a child of God (John 1:12), I am a new creation and have satisfying life in Jesus (John 10:10, 2Corinthians 5:17).
I am so thankful that I have come to know and believe these truths of God; I am not afraid of death anymore, I am healed of past wounds, I know who I am in God, my hope is not in the perishable. I have assurance in Christ, and I have peace and joy that only comes from Jesus as He said in John 14:27 before ascending to heaven, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
